Henry IV Citizen Army FAQ

About The Project

Team Sunshine  in collaboration with Shakespeare in Clark Park presents an epic Henry IV.

One prince leaves behind his bar-fueled youth and rises to responsibility.

Team Sunshine Performance Corporation will assemble a literal army of actors: over 100 people will be involved in creating massive outdoor battle scenes, a preshow pub experience, and a full production of Shakespeare\’s Henry IV.

What can I expect at try-outs?

You will have to show up to a certain place at a certain time. You will have to learn some “moves” and repeat them in front of the director. You might have to yell or chant, too. If you’re really good, we might ask you to do some more stuff.

Do I have to be at every performance?

Yes. But if you think you only have to miss one, still come to the tryouts, and we’ll see if we can work it out.

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. No one under twelve should tryout. And everyone from ages 12 – 17 will need to have an adult (parent, teacher, relative, sibling) who is over 18 and will sign off on being their partner. Best case scenario, they are in the army with you. But at least, they need to be at all the rehearsals and performances that you’re at.

Do I have to memorize lines?

Not everyone will get a line, but some people may. We think there will be chants and things to remember, but you’ll have time to do it and we’ll help you out.

Do I have to have experience doing stage combat?

No. But you do need to be able to run, jump, and remember things.

Is it safe?

You’ll have to sign a waiver saying you are responsible for your own safety. We won’t intentionally put you in harm’s way. And there’s no real fighting or weapons.

Where is the performance?

Clark Park. It’s in West Philly, between Baltimore and Chester Streets, around 44th.

What happens if it rains?

We will have a “rain location” and will move the entire performance there.

What’s the play about?

Do you have 8min? Here, watch this.

Do I have to wear a costume?

Yes. But we will work with you on this. There will be a Costume Designer that will be in charge of the overall look. We may ask you to bring in items from your closet; we may ask you to try this thing on.

Do we use real weapons?

Is it like LARPing (Live Action Role Playing)?

Yes and no. YES because we will be a group of living, breathing, human being in the flesh and moving in real-time engaged in a “battle” activity together. NO because much of it will be crafted and choreographed, and because, well, it’s theater.
