1898 – US Troops occupy Cuba and Puerto Rico

1902 – 1933 US was unsuccessful in annexing Cuba, so Congress passed the Platt Amendment to station military troops in Cuba and intervene, as the US deemed necessary.

1959 Guantanamo Bay was leased to the US by Cuba’s first president. Though the US ceased formal diplomatic relations with Cuba in 1959, they retain control of the base. This is strongly opposed by the Cuban government and they make ongoing attempts to cut off the base.

1912 – US Marines occupy Cuba to crush a sugar workers rebellion

1917 – 1933 US troops occupy Cuba

1960 – Covert actions against Cuba begin

1961 – Bay of Pigs invasion in Cuba

2002 – US converts Guantanamo Bay naval base to a military prison to incarcerate terrorist suspects from Afghanistan and Iraq
